The process involves simultaneously opening inlet and exhaust valves of a cylinder in an inlet phase of a combustion cycle. Inlet and exhaust valves of another cylinder in compressed phase are closed. Exhaust valves of a third cylinder in exhaust phase is opened. A delay is introduced between a beginning of an exhaust phase of one cylinder and beginning of burning gas discharging stage in an inlet phase of the third cylinder. An independent claim is also included for a supercharged four-stroke internal combustion engine.
