The five stroke internal combustion engine has a low pressure cylinder (1) operating on a two stroke cycle between two high pressure cylinders (2,3) operating on a four stroke cycle. The low pressure cylinder is connected to the high pressure cylinder via two valves (9,11) and a scavenging passage (16,17) for supercharging the high pressure cylinders.
