The invention relates to a safety belt device for motor vehicles with a safety belt (11), a belt retractor (15), a drive (19) for the retractor, a transmission between the drive (19) and the retractor (15), and a switch (27), wherein at least one transmission configuration can be set with the switch starting from a free-wheeling mode, which corresponds to a comfort mode with the retractor driven in the unwinding direction and/or a tightening mode with the retractor driven in the winding direction, and wherein the switch (27) can be actuated by means of the drive (19) and, for setting different switch positions, comprises a switch mechanism (13) for a switching element (17) of the switch which can be moved by means of the drive.
