Seat belt device for motor vehicles comprises a seat belt (11), a belt winder (15), a drive (19) for the winder, a gear (23) between the drive and the winder, and a switch (27). Starting with a freewheel mode the switch can be used to adjust at least one gear configuration corresponding to a comfort mode with the winder driven in the unwinding direction (1) and/or a tightened mode with the winder driven in the winding-up direction (2). The switch is operated by the drive and various switch positions are possible. Preferred Features: Various gear configurations are possible, of which one is the comfort mode and another is the tightened mode.
