Pressing or touching a button (23) on the gear lever (20) sends out signals from the on-board computer (18). These reduce engine torque and disengage the clutch (12). The gear is changed manually. During the gear change, engine- (n1) and gearbox input- (n2) speeds are constantly synchronized, the latter being a function of the gear currently selected and vehicle speed. On releasing the button, the clutch is re-engaged and engine torque is matched through signals from the on-board computer, to the accelerator pedal position (17) held by the driver. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding equipment.
