The method involves using the accumulator voltage as an input control parameter for regulating the generator voltage with a regulator temperature correction. Operation-specific parameters are used, e.g. accumulator temperature and uninterrupted engine operating period, to form a voltage demand as a control parameter for regulating the generator voltage by a multifunction regulator with accumulator voltage and temperature correction deactivated. The method involves a multifunction regulator using the accumulator voltage as an input control parameter for regulating the generator voltage with a temperature correction for the regulator temperature. At least two operation-specific parameters are used, e.g. the accumulator temperature and the uninterrupted engine operating period, to form a voltage demand in the central on-board computer or equivalent as a control parameter for regulating the generator voltage by the multifunction regulator, whereby the accumulator voltage and temperature correction are deactivated as control signals.
