This system is characterized in that the engine (1) is associated with different components, and with control means (17) for controlling the operation of these different components in order to control the engine operation, these means being further adapted to trigger a regeneration phase of the particulate filter by combustion of the particles trapped therein by engaging a phase of multiple fuel injections in the engine cylinders during their expansion phase, and in that the control means (17) are associated with means (18,20) for determining the particulate load of the particulate filter (7), in order to regulate the operation of the engine and of the components associated with it and to allow isoperformance operation of the engine.
