This system is characterized in that the engine (1) is associated with various components, and with means (17) for controlling the operation of these various components in order to control the operation of the engine, these means being further adapted to trigger a regeneration phase of the particle filter by combustion of the particles trapped therein by engaging a phase of multiple fuel injections into the engine cylinders during their expansion phase, and in that the control means (17) comprise means (18) for determining the particle load of the filter (7) connected to a differential pressure sensor (20) arranged at the terminals of the filter and adapted to deliver information representative of the overall load of the filter, means (18) for estimating the load of the filter in residues other than particles, and means (18) for calculating the particle load of the filter from the overall load and the load in residues other than particles of the filter.
