Rotation Roundup - Perez is Out, Tong Resets, and More

It’s all about holding your breath. I know, that’s really great fantasy baseball advice, but what else can you do? You do the research, make educated draft picks, transactions and roster decisions, but then life takes over. Injuries run amuck and things just don’t go according to plan. Not to spit a cliché, but all you can do is trust and refine the process. Let’s take a spin around the starting pitching landscape of the past week.

Logan Webb, San Francisco Giants

Webb slotted nicely right back into the San Francisco rotation upon his return from a knee injury. Colorado made Webb work with 18 foul balls out of 86 pitches, so he only made it through 4.1 innings. However, he did limit the Rockies to just one run while striking out five batters. It was one of the better starts this season for Webb as he lowered his ERA to 4.82 in what’s been a rough year for the right-hander. We know he’s capable of a lot more, and Webb’s 4.39 xERA and 3.54 FIP illustrate that. Exercise some patience here.

Eury Perez, Miami Marlins

The Marlins aren’t going to be able to fill Perez’s slot in the rotation with a similar option, and it’s problematic for the right-hander to be out for at least eight weeks. It’s a plus that it’s not an arm injury, but holding onto Perez for the next two months isn’t going to be easy while he recovers from a hamstring injury. Perez has a 4.60 ERA, 4.88 xERA, and he’s also allowing a career high 1.58 home runs per nine innings. He has an explosive arm, but a 15% barrel rate against doesn’t generate much optimism or expectation of success.

Casey Mize, Detroit Tigers

We know that Mize is now on the Injured List with right adductor inflammation, and while the minimum stay is possible, we also can’t say for sure. It’s a shame because Mize is in the midst of perhaps his best season to date. Through nine starts, Mize has a 2.27 ERA and 0.97 WHIP while striking out 49 batters in 47.2 innings. Assuming there are no setbacks, Mize should be worth the wait as he misses a few turns in rotation.
