It’s truly a battle of attrition. That’s what starting pitching has become as you just hope that it’s not someone on your roster who’s exiting a start early. There are some exciting young pitchers to keep an eye on as there’s a lot to dig into. Let’s not keep you waiting as we jump into the latest starting pitching news around MLB.

The fact that Cease was able to play catch just the day after he went to the Injured List is a great sign. It’s unclear how long Cease’s hamstring injury will keep him sidelined, but the good thing is that he’ll be able to keep his arm in use. That also follows suit with Cease’s initial assessment that it would be a minimum stay length on the Injured List. That’s a plus for everyone as Cease has made a seamless adjustment to pitching in Toronto. The right-hander has 92 strikeouts in 62 innings with a solid 3.05 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. There doesn’t appear to be anything to worry about here.

Let’s blame it on the knee. That’s the hope anyway, as Webb returned to the mound on Friday after being activated from the Injured List. Previously, the right-hander was dealing with a knee injury. It remains to be seen how much of his 5.06 ERA and 1.40 WHIP can be blamed on the injury, but Webb is simply too good a pitcher. In the quest for optimism, Webb has a 4.54 xERA and 3.53 FIP, so this could represent a buy-low opportunity.

Things were going so well for Perez on Wednesday. Through four innings, Perez limited the Toronto Blue Jays to just three hits over four innings while striking out nine. He then exited with a hamstring injury. It was being referred to as a spasm and is already progressing, but we have to await the MRI results to be sure. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Perez take his next turn in what’s been an up-and-down season for the right-hander. The strikeouts continue to be there, but the walks and home runs are a problem that the talented Perez needs to work through. However, that upside will keep us coming back even while he struggles to figure it out.
