Theatre in the Grove opens 'Mojada: A Medea in Los Angeles' Friday

Theatre in the Grove's production of “Mojada: A Medea in Los Angeles,” a contemporary drama by playwright Luis Alfaro, opens Friday, May 29, kicking off a three-weekend run at the Forest Grove community theater. The play reimagines the Greek tragedy of Medea through the experience of a young Mexican immigrant building a new life for her family in Los Angeles. As she confronts isolation, cultural displacement and the daily pressures of survival in an unfamiliar city, the story traces how love, sacrifice and identity can fracture under strain. “Mojada invites audiences to move beyond stereotypes and statistics to experience the personal cost of seeking a better life,” said representatives from Theatre in the Grove in a press release. “It is a story of resilience, heartbreak, and the search for identity in a world that can feel both hopeful and unforgiving.” Performances run Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. on May 29 and 30, June 5 and 6, and June 12 and 13. In a blog post, Theatre in the Grove said the title of the production could be uncomfortable to some. “Mojada” is a Spanish term that has historically been used as a slur toward immigrants, particularly undocumented immigrants crossing the border. Luis Alfaro chose the title intentionally. Rather than avoiding the word, he confronts it directly, reclaiming it as part of a larger conversation about prejudice, dehumanization, and the labels society places on people. The discomfort is part of the point,” the post noted. The production is Theatre in the Grove's first by a Latino playwright. Theatre in the Grove is at 2028 Pacific Ave. in Forest Grove.
