Banks' Mahoney, Bartholomew honored as Rotary Youth Citizens of the Month

A Banks High School senior who has helped keep the district's music program running and a Banks Middle School eighth grader known for his kindness and leadership are the latest Youth Citizens of the Month from the Rotary Club of Forest Grove. Connor Mahoney, a senior, and Mason "Ace" Bartholomew, an eighth grader, were recognized for their academic success, contributions to the community, and for exemplifying the ideals of Rotary, according to a press release from the club. Mahoney has mastered several instruments and become proficient in at least 14. When the Banks School District experienced staffing issues within the music program this year, Banks High School Principal Jacob Pence turned to Mahoney for help. "Connor stepped up to be a teaching assistant and help lead both our high school and middle school music classes, and also led our high school pep band at home football games," Pence said. "There are not many teenagers that I would trust to run a music program. Connor is one of them." Mahoney plans to attend college after high school. He is currently deciding between four schools. Bartholomew is a member of the Banks Middle School yearbook staff and has been involved with the drama program. He is also a founding member of the school's Neurodiversity Club. "Ace is a responsible and kind student who demonstrates leadership both in and out of the classroom," said Banks Middle School Principal Caitlin Everett. "He is someone who naturally steps into leadership roles and is always willing to lend a hand. His kindness, caring nature, and great sense of justice help create a positive environment around him." Both honorees received a certificate and a $50 gift card from Frye's Action Athletics. The Youth Citizen of the Month program rotates between the Forest Grove, Banks and Gaston school districts, honoring eighth graders and seniors for citizenship and character.
