The present invention relates to a load carrier adapter (1) as well as a load carrier that comprises one such adapter. The load carrier adapter according to the invention serves for attachment to a motor vehicle and comprises a first support element (1a), which can be rigidly and releasably connected to the motor vehicle and has a longitudinal axis which, during intended use, extends perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle, and a second support element (1b) coupled to the first support element (1a), which is translationally displaceable along the longitudinal axis of the first support element (1a), and a fastening device (4) for mounting a load receptacle (10), wherein the fastening device (4) is rotatable relative to the first support element (1a).
