The invention relates to a cruise control system in a motor vehicle with a speed setpoint that can be set by a driver on a setpoint transmitter. According to the invention, during driving operation with an activated cruise control system (GRA) set to a speed setpoint (S1) on the setpoint transmitter, a permissible maximum speed is additionally automatically detected, and this maximum speed is communicated to the driver as a recommendation for direct adoption as a new speed setpoint (S2). In addition, an operable switching element for such a direct adoption as a new speed setpoint (S2) is activated, and after actuation of the switching element by the driver, the new speed setpoint (S2) corresponding to the currently permissible maximum speed is directly set and specified on the cruise control system (GRA).
