The invention relates to a roof system for a vehicle (1) having a fixed roof (2) with a roof opening (3) that may be closed by roof panel (4). The roof system including a pair of parallel guide rails (9, 61) and an operating mechanisms (10) for each of the guide rails (9). Each operating mechanism including a front mechanism (20), a tilting mechanism (24), and a locking mechanism (62) for locking the tilting mechanism (24). Wherein the locking mechanism (62) is slidably guided in the guide rail (9, 61) and is rearward of and remote from the tilting mechanism (24) seen in a longitudinal direction of the vehicle (1)An effect thereof is that the package of the front mechanism may be reduced and along therewith the space required therefor inside the guide rail, allowing for a smaller cross-section of the guide rail.
