The plate has an installation side to engage a vehicle body and a component side opposite to the installation side to carry components of a mirror assembly. Contact footings (10) are laterally spaced on the installation side. Each footing has a bearing surface protruding beyond a surface plane (14) of the installation side for bearing against the body, when the plate is mounted to hold a non-uniform surface on the body. An independent claim is also included for a method for attaching a mounting plate for a vehicle mirror assembly to a non-uniform surface of a vehicle body.
