The camera (8) has at least one image sensor (24) that detects first optical radiation from the traffic area in the motor vehicle surroundings and different, second optical radiation is fed to and detected by part of the image sensor, whereby moistening and/or wetting with water drops of an external screen surface of the motor vehicle can be detected depending on the second optical radiation.
