The device (30) is designed as a ball element (34) to be joined to the towing unit located at the trailer and is positioned at the tip of a curved shaft (32). The opposite end is held by a bearing element (20) located behind the rear bumper and the lower edge of the vehicle body. The device (30), forming a right angle with the car body for use, can be swiveled into various positions including a resting position close to the vehicle using a vertical (42) as well as a horizontal rotation axle (44). The swivel joint (46) is preferably designed as a ball and socket unit (50, 64).
