An injector 11 is disposed at such an angle that an injection nozzle 11a is arranged opposite to intake valve openings 3e and a mixture of a fuel injected from the injection nozzle 11a and air generates air motion in a cylinder. The air-fuel mixture is directly injected from the intake valve openings 3e which are opened during fuel injection of the injector 11 into a cylinder bore 2b to generate the air motion. As a result, it is possible to reduce the amount of fuel adhering to wall surfaces without causing worsening of combustion characteristics and improve exhaust gas conditions and throttle responsivity.
