The steering column module (4) has a housing (14) with a central bore (8) to accommodate the steering column. It incorporates plug-in electrical contacts (42) on its side at its lower end adjacent to centering tubular members (44,46). A switching or drive module (6) plugs into the steering column support and has projecting pins engaging with the centering tubular members. A sideways projection (16) on the upper end of the steering column module has sidewalls (20,22) with rails (24,26) engaging a sprung top portion of the switching or drive module.
