Energy recovery system
DRIVE
October 22, 2003
The energy recovery system includes a turbocharger unit (14) having a turbocharger turbine (15) receiving exhaust from the engine (10) and a sub turbine (18) driven by the exhaust gases. The sub turbine drives an electrical generator (20) which supplies electrical power to a power input controller (22) which supplies electrical power to a fan motor (26) which drives an engine cooling fan (28). The power input controller also supplies electrical power to a pump motor which drives an engine coolant pump. The sub turbine is preferably a variable geometry turbine whose geometry is controlled so that its power consumption matches the electrical load of the generator.
