The starter motor has a brushless variable-reluctance or squirrel cage rotor (14) with a pinion (12) mounted on its shaft (22) and able to slide axially, along grooves formed on the surface of the shaft. The rotor is axially offset so it moves axially when energized to engage the pinion.
