The carpeting material, comprising a tufted textile layer (1) on a thermoformable base layer, e.g. with a mineral filler, has the tufted layer made in strips (8) of different density according to the position they will occupy on the floor surface. The tufts are of greater density, for example, in positions where they will be under the feet of driver or passengers, and less dense beneath the vehicle seats. The tufted layer is made from a textile material passed under a bank of tufting needles fed with fibres of different yarn counts before coating with adhesive and applying to a layer of thermoformable material. The thermoformable layer can then be backed with a layer of foam or felt.
