The headlamps have fixed (36) and movable masks (46) axially inserted along their optical axis (A-A) between the reflector (28) and a convergent lens (30) which is movable between retracted and occulting positions in which it modifies the headlamp beam shape. The mask (46) is fixed to an electric motor (62) shaft (64). The altered beam shape being suitable for driving in the rain.. The automobile headlamps project adjustable cross beams (Fc) for driving in rain or dry conditions. Each headlamp (22,24) has a light source and elliptical reflector (28) whose first focal point is near to the source. A convergent lens (30) in each headlamp has a focal plane near to a second focal point of the reflector (28).
