Detection and emission modules (3) respectively installed on several wheels (2) of the vehicle (1) are capable of emitting a signal including an indication of a state of the wheel. The captured signal is compared to several waveforms respectively stored in relation to wheel positions, to select a wheel position for which the stored waveform matches the captured signal. After preprocessing the captured signal and identifying extrema of the preprocessed signal, the comparison between the captured signal and a waveform includes applying a temporal transformation to the preprocessed signal to align first and second extrema of the preprocessed signal with first and second extrema of said waveform, and calculating a distance between the transformed signal and said waveform. The selected wheel position is that for which the calculated distance is minimal.
