A retention device (10) for the cargo space (C) of motor vehicles, such as combination vehicles or the like, has at least one elongated receiving bracket, such as for example at least one roller housing. In the receiving bracket, a material web (18, 19, 20), in particular a mesh web, is respectively fastened to a winding shaft. The material web (18, 19, 20) is withdrawable from the winding shaft by means of its free outer transverse edge (RA) against a restoring moment, whereby the receiving bracket is respectively assigned to a seating installation area (E) for a motor vehicle seat (11, 12) which in particular has a foldable seat back (15, 16, 17). The material web (18, 19, 20) is withdrawable toward an interior roof surface (D) of the motor vehicle and is to be fastened there by means of at least one retaining rod (H) arranged on or adjacent to the interior roof surface (D), in particular releasably. The retaining rod (H) forms a component which is separable from each material web (18, 19, 20). All outer free transverse edges (RA) of the material web (18, 19, 20) can be fixed independently of each other material web (18, 19, 20) at different withdrawal lengths against further withdrawal.
