The arrangement has a measurement head unit movable independently relative to the object with an object surface scanner and a scanner position detection arrangement with distance sensors associated with pairs of measurement points and a computer unit. The computer unit derives the spatial position of the measurement head unit relative to the object from the distances between the measurement points of each measurement point pair. The arrangement has a measurement head unit (4) movable independently relative to the object (1) with an object surface scanner and a scanner position detection arrangement. A predetermined number of measurement points fixed relative to the object and the same number fixed relative to the measurement head unit are defined relative to a reference system. The position detection system has distance sensors associated with pairs of measurement points and a computer unit. The computer unit derives the spatial position of the measurement head unit relative to the object from the distances between the measurement points of each measurement point pair.
