Codex usage visibility issue and unified account dashboard suggestion
Title: Codex Usage Visibility Issue and Suggestion for a Unified OpenAI Services Dashboard
Hello,
I am a ChatGPT Plus subscriber and a regular Codex user for software development. I would like to report an issue I encountered and share some related feedback regarding usage visibility, quota management, and the overall user experience across OpenAI products.
Please note that some of the observations below may be specific to my account, environment, or a temporary issue. My goal is simply to provide constructive feedback that may help improve the product experience.
Issue Observed
Recently, Codex displayed the following message:
“You’re out of Codex messages”
The system correctly informed me that I had reached a limit and also provided a quota reset date.
However, when I opened:
Settings → Usage & Billing
the page displayed:
“Unable to load usage settings”
As a result, I was unable to access detailed information regarding my Codex usage.
Verification Performed
To better understand the issue, I verified the following:
My ChatGPT Plus subscription is active.
Billing information is available and accessible.
The OpenAI Platform Usage dashboard is accessible.
The OpenAI Platform correctly shows $0 API usage and 0 API requests on my account.
Codex authentication appears functional.
Codex continues working normally for development tasks.
The issue appears isolated to usage visibility and quota information.
User Impact
From a user perspective, the system clearly knows:
That a quota exists.
That the quota has been exhausted.
When the quota will reset.
However, I cannot see:
Total quota.
Used quota.
Remaining quota.
Usage history.
Consumption trends.
This makes it difficult to monitor usage proactively and avoid unexpected interruptions.
Additional Observation
While investigating this issue, I noticed that usage information is currently spread across multiple OpenAI products and dashboards.
For example:
ChatGPT displays subscription and billing information.
The OpenAI Platform displays API usage and billing.
Codex appears to have its own quota system.
Other OpenAI services may have separate usage and limit information.
As a user, it is difficult to understand:
Which OpenAI services are associated with my account.
Which limits apply to each service.
How much of each quota has been consumed.
When each quota resets.
Suggestion: Unified OpenAI Services Dashboard
A unified account dashboard could provide a much clearer experience.
For example, it could display:
ChatGPT Plus
Codex
OpenAI API Platform
Sora
GPTs
Deep Research
Future OpenAI services
For each service:
Status
Active subscription
Current usage
Remaining quota
Reset dates
Historical consumption
This would provide users with a complete view of the OpenAI services associated with their account.
Suggested Improvements for Codex
A dedicated Codex usage dashboard could display:
Total quota
Used quota
Remaining quota
Percentage consumed
Reset date and time
Historical usage by billing cycle
Optional usage breakdown by model
Example:
Used: 420 / 500
Remaining: 80
Reset: 2026-06-30 03:51 UTC
This would significantly improve transparency and predictability.
Technical Observation
One observation that stood out during my investigation is that the system clearly knows when a quota has been exhausted and when it will reset.
However, that information is not currently visible through the user interface.
The current experience gives the impression that usage information exists internally but is not fully surfaced through the user interface.
This may be an isolated issue affecting my account, or it may simply reflect a current product limitation. Either way, improving visibility into usage and quota information would provide substantial value to users.
Additional UX Feedback
While preparing this report, I also collected multiple screenshots during troubleshooting. However, I could not find a clear way to attach multiple screenshots through the bug reporting interface, and the form appears to only support the automatically captured screenshot.
If additional screenshot attachments are not currently supported, making this capability more visible could help users provide better diagnostic information.
Environment
ChatGPT Plus
Codex Desktop
Ubuntu 24.04
Issue observed on June 2026
Closing Remarks
I enjoy using ChatGPT and Codex and consider them among the most useful software development tools available today.
My intention with this report is simply to provide constructive feedback that may help improve transparency, observability, quota management, and user experience.
If the team is ever interested in additional technical feedback regarding UX, observability, distributed systems architecture, service integration, infrastructure, or generally anything involving computers and software systems, I would be happy to contribute constructive ideas and feedback.
Thank you for your time and for building such powerful tools.
Best regards,
João Alves
