At Monday night’s Durham City Council meeting, members moved through a broad agenda that included homelessness in city parks, budget priorities, historic preservation, and several development decisions.

Early in the meeting, Mayor Leonardo Williams responded to resident concerns about people sleeping in parks, pointing to limited shelter capacity, public safety concerns, and the city’s view that homelessness is a humanitarian issue requiring a community-wide response.

During public comment, speakers also urged the council to look beyond budget cuts and consider additional revenue sources to support priorities such as housing for unhoused residents and violence interruption efforts. One speaker called for a dedicated city budget line of about $10 million for a comprehensive violence interruption program.
