Squirrel and Hedgehog (Korean: 다람이와 고슴도치 Taramiwa Kosŭmdoch’i) is a popular animated TV series from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, with 32 episodes released between 1977 and 2012, and more episodes in the works as of 2025. Parts of Squirrel and Hedgehog were also dubbed with a greatly revised plot and released as Brave Soldier or Soldados Valientes in English and Spanish respectively. The series concerns the squirrels and hedgehogs of Flower Hill as they resolutely defend their homeland from invaders, hence the title.

Tonight we’ll be watching the first five episodes of the 2000s/2010s “reboot”. Due to the awkward number of episodes and variable episode lengths, I decided to split it as five episodes this week and three episodes next week. The extra time both weeks will be filled by fanime. My Demon Girlfriend is a 2015-2019 unfinished supernatural love comedy fanime by MissLadyMeringue, who has created several other fanime that we might check out at a later date. My Demon Girlfriend ’s five episodes vary between 3 and 5 minutes in length; we’ll be watching the full series as a 20 minute back-to-back compilation. The plot of My Demon Girlfriend is fairly self-explanatory: A guy named Hiro summons a demon named Polka to become his girlfriend. You may notice that Polka is voiced by Mojocrystaltokyo, AKA Kisaka Toriama, AKA the creator of our beloved Tokyo Crystal Mew. Fanime is a small world indeed!
