This week Hairy Harmonies looks at the building blocks of a romantic love story. Joseph Campbell propounds that ancient love (as from Eros/Cupid) was little more than sexual desire without the romance brought to us in the 11th century by the troubadours. We’re looking at two films that demonstrate what goes in to making a romance. The first, Final Cut: Ladies & Gentlemen is an archetypal boy-meets-girl story constructed from over a thousand clips from 450 films. The second, Three Thousand Years of Longing , gives us several variations on a theme framed inside a larger story where all are told as fables, leaving the viewer to dissect the less epic truth behind the mythic tale. Beyond examining each film, one might consider that both were directed by men, but the source material for the second was written by a woman, and how much time and depth each character is given.

Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
1h 48min 23sec, English with hard coded English subtitles Directed by George Miller
A lonely scholar, on a trip to Istanbul, discovers a Djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. Based off A. S. Byatt’s collection of mythic short stories, The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye.
From Gizmodo:
There is something satisfying about watching the theories of storytelling play out on screen, even when the storyteller attempts to justify their own story, their own place in the world. It brings up a lot of questions about storytelling, who gets to tell stories, and what stories become the truth.
