More on security concerns here: hexbear.net/post/3471120\n\nThis week Hairy Harmonies looks at the building blocks of a romantic love story. Joseph Campbell propounds that ancient love (as from Eros/Cupid) was little more than sexual desire without the romance brought to us in the 11th century by the troubadours. We’re looking at two films that demonstrate what goes in to making a _romance_. The first, **Final Cut: Ladies & Gentlemen** is an archetypal boy-meets-girl story constructed from over a thousand clips from 450 films. The second, **Three Thousand Years of Longing** , gives us several variations on a theme framed inside a larger story where all are told as fables, leaving the viewer to dissect the less epic truth behind the mythic tale. Beyond examining each film, one might consider that both were directed by men, but the source material for the second was written by a woman, and how much time and depth each character is given.\n\n## Final Cut: Ladies & Gentlemen (2012) Hölgyeim és uraim\n\n1h 25min 47sec, Multiple languages with hard coded English subtitles\nDirected by **György Pálfi**\n\nSynopsis: A simple yet timeless love story between a man and a woman, told using scenes edited together from hundreds of other films.\n\nFrom www.imdb.com/title/tt2243299/trivia/:\n\n> Director György Pálfi said at the last Budapest screening of the film: “We came from torrent, we go back to torrent.” He referred to how they got hold of most clips used in the movie via peer-to-peer file sharing, and how the film itself will become available to the public.\n\nLong examination of film: sensesofcinema.com/…/creativity-beyond-originalit…\n\n## Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)\n\n1h 48min 23sec, English with hard coded English subtitles\nDirected by **George Miller**\n\nA lonely scholar, on a trip to Istanbul, discovers a Djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. Based off A. S. Byatt’s collection of mythic short stories, The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye.\n\nFrom Gizmodo:\n\n> There is something satisfying about watching the theories of storytelling play out on screen, even when the storyteller attempts to justify their own story, their own place in the world. It brings up a lot of questions about storytelling, who gets to tell stories, and what stories become the truth.\n\n## Content Warnings:\n\n**Final Cut: Ladies & Gentlemen**\nno rating certifications found (imdb)\nSex & Nudity: **Severe** (including one brief but explicit clip of penile/vaginal penetration)\nViolence & Gore: Moderate\nProfanity: Mild\nAlcohol, Drugs & Smoking: Mild\nFrightening & Intense Scenes: Mild\nhidden spoilers from www.doesthedogdie.com/media/135971\n:::spoiler 8 spoilers that won’t ruin the movie someone becomes unconscious\nbabies or unborn children\nsomeone dies\nsexual content\nnude scenes\nblood/gore\ngun violence\nnatural bodies of water\n:::\n\n**Three Thousand Years of Longing**\nContent Warnings: U.S. rated R for some sexual content, graphic nudity and brief violence\nSex & Nudity: Moderate\nViolence & Gore: Mild\nProfanity: Mild\nAlcohol, Drugs & Smoking: Mild\nFrightening & Intense Scenes: Mild\nhidden spoilers from www.doesthedogdie.com/media/68778\n:::spoiler 35 spoilers that won’t ruin the movie child abused\naddiction\nsomeone abuses alcohol\nhorse dies\ndead animal\nbugs\nspiders\nsomeone restrained\nsomeone struggles to breathe\nsomeone asphyxiates\nsomeone chokes\nsomeone becomes unconscious\nsomeone drowns\nsomeone falls to their death\nsomeone dies\npregnant person dies\nfamily member dies\nsomeone cheats\nmisophonia\nbabies or unborn children\nsomeone miscarried\nfat jokes\nminority misrepresented\nminor sexualized\nlarge age gap\nsexual content\nnude scenes\nsomeone sexually objectified\nsomeone loses their virginity\nsomeone sexually assaulted\nsomeone sexually assaulted onscreen\nblood/gore\nbody horror\nnatural bodies of water\n:::\n\nBefore the main event, there will be an unrelated short documentary on Texas blues artist Mance Lipscomb by the famed Les Blank: A Life Well Spent.
