Grace Wales Bonner is, depending on the day, a fashion designer, an academic researcher, a curator and an archivist. She is currently leading a four-year research project titled ‘Between Critique and Hope’ at the University of Applied Arts Vienna while simultaneously producing one of the most consistently interesting bodies of work in contemporary fashion. ‘Sun Poem,’ her Spring/Summer 2027 collection, began as a study of portraiture which then developed in a fully fleshed-out wardrobe. Every look reads as considered without being stiff, carrying a personal narrative that is entirely free from conventional sentimentality. The collection takes its title from the world of Keorapetse Kgositsile, the South African poet whose verse ‘For Hugh Masekela’ opens with the lines that bind the collection: “home is where the music is.” Kgositsile, who became South Africa’s national poet laureate and spent years in exile writing about memory, displacement and belonging, is an apt touchstone for a designer who has always treated clothing as a form of cultural documentation. The street-level documentary photography that informs the collection’s gestures carries that same spirit.
