Rotation Roundup - Three Aces Return and a Fourth Has a Setback

I want to bring good news. I want to be optimistic. But, more critically, we have to deal with the situation at hand. Managing a pitching staff is not easy, but this week allows me to push through some optimism. Well, at least in some situations that is. Let us take a look at the latest starting pitching news around baseball and see how it impacts your fantasy team.

Tarik Skubal, Detroit Tigers

We were trying not to be too optimistic regarding Skubal’s timeline for return, but it appears that we should have been. Getting a positive update about a pitcher is always a plus, and it is even better when it happens to be one of the best pitchers in the league. Everything with Skubal’s rehab has progressed well enough for the Tigers ace to return just 38 days after elbow surgery. In his last appearance, Skubal needed just 54 pitches to get through five scoreless innings while striking out six. Skubal’s workload will likely be limited initially as he continues to ramp up to full strength, but there is no question that he needs to be back in your lineups.

Hunter Brown, Houston Astros

This is what it is all about. We can all take a collective deep breath as Brown returns to action having been sidelined since April with a shoulder injury. The Astros are going to play it cautiously with Brown as they give their ace one more rehab appearance, but that means he will be lined up to make his return to the big leagues on June 15. After staring at him on the bench or Injured List for the last two months, you know exactly where Brown belongs.

Dylan Cease, Toronto Blue Jays

Let us keep the good news train going. Another ace returned to the mound this week as Cease made his way back from the Injured List. Thankfully, Cease’s injury was just a strained hamstring, and there seem to be no lingering adverse effects on his arm or his performance. Cease threw six innings of one-run ball against the Philadelphia Phillies and he struck out eleven batters. In his final inning, Cease was still hitting 98 mph as he continues his strong debut season in Toronto. With a 2.91 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 103 strikeouts in only 68 innings, his 2026 has looked like a fantastic first campaign with Toronto.
