Tate McKee was handed the ball on Thursday, and I was excited to see the 6-foot-3 right-hander in person. On his fastballs, he works from a 5.5-foot release height with a 30-to-32 degree arm angle. He was direct to the plate in this outing, though I’ve seen the mechanics get out of sync at points this season.
In the windup, he moves the glove from in front of his face down to the belt, then back up after a small rhythmic step to the side. He reaches a chest-high leg lift before working down the slope, staying compact and closed. He then drives the front leg outside of the hip. The way the arm works through the low slot from a shorter arm path. He hides the ball extremely well. From behind the plate, you can really see how the ball fires out of his hand.
