Sunday Smoke: Prospect Watch
Howdy, folks!
Time for a curveball: an all-prospect Sunday Smoke. I started by focusing on guys who are close (or closer than you think) to making a big-league impact, then went a little off the beaten track with some names that have been getting me excited lately. Hey, when you choose to write about baseball virtually every week for years on end, I'm learning that following your passion rather than strict goalposts is a more enjoyable experience for both you and me.
Sunday Smoke - Prospects LiveProspects LiveDarren Eisenhauer
The baseball world is humongous. You can think you're addicted to our dynasty game, but there's always a prospect or two you haven't heard of who is starting to pop off. Better yet, there's so much action going on between MiLB and MLB that it can be tricky to even keep tabs on your favorite prospects!
That's why Prospects Live pays me the big bucks to do it for you.
Robby Snelling, LHP Miami Marlins
Snelling just looks like a random blue-collar guy
Let’s check in on Robby Snelling, who some thought may have cracked the Marlins’ rotation out of camp…yup, it's just as I thought: a pristine 1.86 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and a 40% K rate. That’ll do. He’s walking more than usual, possibly in an effort to generate more strikeouts and force his way into the bigs. Regardless of what’s going on, the bottom line is that Robby Snelling’s redemption arc is nearly complete, and he’s even morphed himself from a high-floor/low-ceiling type into an exciting dynasty asset. It also helps that Snelling is built like a linebacker, giving hope that he can be at least a little more durable than starting pitchers have been in recent years.
Thomas White, LHP Miami Marlins
The Marlins' lefties are going to be a problem!
If there was ever a buy-low window for Thomas White over the past year, it might have been the last month, when he was sidelined with an injury, and it was unclear when he’d see MiLB action again. If such a window existed, it is now over and erased, and he’s back to basically doing exactly what his teammate Robby Snelling is doing: White also has a 40% K rate to go along with a 2.13 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP. While he’s only given us 12 innings at Triple-A thus far, it’s still nice to see the walks trending down, considering the only real concern with Mr. White is some occasionally sketchy command. He’s got the prototypical frame and stuff to be an outright ace, and he could also make an appearance in 2026 if he can stay healthy. Snelling likely gets the first shot, but there’s room for both of these fun talents.
Mitch Bratt, LHP Arizona Diamondbacks
Mitch Bratt: probably also good in yoga classes
