Dynasty Shortstop Targets
From a dynasty perspective, shortstop is an interesting position. When I’m assembling a dynasty team, especially from scratch, there’s generally not a lot of positional scarcity. While it’s a conversation for a different forum on roster construction, the intention is to secure the most talent and upside possible.
That ultimately brings us to the shortstop position. When we are talking about youth, especially among 17-year-old and 18-year-old top prospects, they’ll likely be found at the shortstop position. That means from a dynasty perspective, there aren’t going to be many shortstops who fall under the radar.
However, that doesn’t mean we won’t try. As we prepare for the journey that is the 2026 dynasty fantasy baseball season, let’s take a look at some shortstop options I’m targeting.

Is it all about health? It’s been an up-and-down three years for Anthony Volpe to begin his major league career. After injuring his shoulder diving for a ball in May, Volpe simply wasn’t the same. To his credit, Volpe stayed in the lineup and still finished with 19 home runs and 18 stolen bases, but no one would consider it a successful season for Volpe.
So far this spring, Volpe is healthy and progressing as expected. He’s still going to be delayed to start the season, but the shortstop should be back pretty quickly. Before we go any further, Volpe is still a shortstop with clear 20/20 potential, whose value has dropped sharply. To be fair, Volpe hasn’t done that since his rookie year in 2023, but he hasn’t strayed far. In 2023, Volpe had 21 home runs and 24 stolen bases, but he hit only .209. The following year, the batting average jumped to .243, he stole 28 bases, but there was a real sacrifice in the power department (12 home runs). Last year, his batting average dropped to .212, but he set a career high with 72 RBI, along with 19 home runs and 18 stolen bases.
Given that he’s now healthy, Volpe should have no issues getting back on a clear 20/20 pace. From a quantity perspective, though, the delayed start to the season is keeping both his value and volume down. But it’s important to remember that his starting spot will not be empty prior to his return. From a plate skills perspective, Volpe posted a .180 ISO and a 10.9% barrel rate last season. He was also limited by a .252 BABIP last year, so the hope is that he can get the batting average back up to a manageable number. Regardless, there’s a lot to like here.
