Live Looks: San Diego at California 3/6/26

For the first time this year, I was able to get back to Stu Gordon Stadium to check out the Bay Area’s best matchup of the day, San Diego vs Cal. While it looks like it might be a down year for the Toreros, the Golden Bears look to have recovered well after a slight portal unraveling of their 2025 roster and a rocky start to the 2026 season. It was a perfect 70 degrees at the 6:00 first pitch, and now to the notes.

Cal RHP**Oliver de la Torre(July ‘26 Age: 21.1, ‘26 Draft, 6’4/225)**

After an Opening Day start that was short-lived vs Santa Clara, Oliver de la Torre has made improvements in each ensuing outing, and that all came together on Friday when he delivered a career start, striking out 9 San Diego batters in 6 innings, only allowing 1 run, 5 hits, and a walk. De la Torre actually got all his punchouts in by the fourth inning and was on pace for a spectacular start, but his stuff and command started to deteriorate after he hit the 70-pitch mark. Still, this was an excellent start for a pitcher who’s raised his career K-BB% rate from 7.8% to 15.2% and now 26.3%, led particularly by a minuscule 3.9 BB%.
