Insta360's Luna Ultra takes on DJI with Leica glass and 8K video
I've been reviewing the DJI OSMO Pocket 4 for a few weeks, and I'm a big fan. But Insta360's latest gimbal camera could have an edge on DJI's model thanks to its dual-lens design and Leica lenses. At the very least, DJI has some hot competition.
The Luna Ultra is Insta360's first gimbal camera, and it comes loaded.
The primary imaging system pairs a 1-inch 8K sensor with a Leica Summicron lens, capable of 8K30fps video with Dolby Vision, 10-bit I-Log, and 14 stops of dynamic range.
While that main lens is epic on its own, it's joined by a secondary 1/1.3-inch sensor with an F2.0 aperture across five focal lengths, enabling natural bokeh and up to 12x zoom, including 6x lossless.
For video, the Luna Ultra covers 8K30fps with Dolby Vision and 10-bit I-Log for flexible colour grading.
Still shooters get 37MP UltraPhotos and a 200MP Scenic Panorama mode. Low-light performance is handled by PureVideo Mode, which Insta360 says reduces noise and improves detail up to 4K60fps.
The Leica partnership, now six years deep across five co-developed products, brings more than lens branding.
Luna Ultra includes Leica colour profiles (Natural, Vivid, and Chrome), ACES support for professional colour workflows, and built-in timecode for multi-camera sync with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.
While the twin lens setup is unique enough, Insta360 has doubled down by adding a detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen, which enables remote monitoring and control from up to 20 metres.
It makes solo shooting at unusual angles far more practical than any fixed-screen competitor.
The body weighs just over 200g and the 1550mAh battery is rated for up to four hours of use, with fast charging to 80% in around 23 minutes. Built-in storage sits at 47GB, with microSD support for up to 1TB.
Insta360 co-founder and VP of Marketing Max Richter described the camera as a reset for the category: "Luna reflects our vision for the future of gimbal imaging, built to help people capture what matters with greater ease, confidence, and authenticity."
