“ Firefly” Sequel Series In Development At 20th Television Animation With “Arrow” Creators As Showrunners And Whole Cast To Return.

Firefly fans are in for a treat. Nathan Fillion has just revealed at Awesome Con, 2026 that an animated Firefly series is in advanced development at 20th Television Animation.

Married writing-producing team Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,Arro w) and Tara Butters (Marvel Television “ Agent Carter ”,The CW “ Reaper ”) are attached to serve as showrunners, and a script has been completed. Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is not involved in the animated project.

The proposed sequel series is set in the timeline between the series finale after the original 2002 television run and its 2005 feature film continuation,****_Serenity_ , expanding the universe while preserving continuity with the established lore.

Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau , all of whom are expected to reprise their roles. Adam Baldwin, who played Jayne Cobb, will also lend his voice to the project.

The sequel series is being developed through Fillion’s production banner Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation and Disney Television Studios controls the underlying rights to the franchise and SHADOWMACHINE (Netflix “Bojack Horseman”, TBS “Final Space”, MTV Animation “Clone High”)**** as animation services house. No streamer was announced but likely the project will be for Hulu to expand it’s adult animation catalog.

The announcement culminates a week-long viral social media campaign teasing that news was on the horizon. The videos’ millions of views have brought Firefly back to the forefront of trending topics. It also follows yesterday’s confirmation that the “ Buffy the Vampire Slayer ” reboot by Chloé Zhao would not be picked up to series at Hulu**.**

The studio recently gave series order to**“Deano”** created by Dean Thomas, David Ferrier and “Bluey” creatorJoe Brumm serving as executive producer and** “Family Guy**” spin-off “Stewie ” created by Seth McFarlane and Kirker Butler.
