Thanks for the examples. I can build a compact hopper system with 1 furnace 3 hoppers and 1 chest which is 5 nodes. It seems that such simplicity and compactness is not possible with pipeworks. : ( I prefer to build small and I guess pipeworks is more suitable for using vast swathes of space. I'll see what I can do.
