Can it be used to do the same job the wonderfully clever hoppers do? I tried chest > injector > tube > furnace plus blinky and it just stupidly drops stuff on the floor.

Stuff dropping on the floor should only happen if you are over-filling to the point of a pipe bursting. Add more machines in parallel, or a return route - when a machine like a furnace is full, it should spit the item back out.
