Petrol and diesel drivers demand urgent action from Labour or risk 'fuel disruption'

Petrol and diesel drivers continue to plead with the Government to axe the planned fuel duty hike to minimise the impact of rising prices at the pumps.

The latest data from RAC Fuel Watch shows that drivers are being hit with costs of 154.45p for a litre of petrol and a staggering 185.23p for diesel, with the service estimating that prices will continue to rise.

Costs at the pump are expected to jump further, especially following US President Donald Trump's social media post, confirming that Tuesday (April 7) would be "Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran".

The escalation comes after the United States rescued an American soldier after an F-15 fighter jet was downed in Iran, with President Trump threatening retaliatory measures if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened.

The Strait of Hormuz has become a key chokepoint in the war, with only a handful of ships able to pass through its waters over the last month, severely affecting global oil prices.

Drivers and motoring organisations across the UK have continually called on the Government to scrap the planned cut to the rate of fuel duty to provide temporary relief at the pumps.

Under current plans, the 5p per litre fuel duty cut, which was introduced after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, will be rolled back over three phases, namely by 1p in September, 2p in December and a further 2p in March 2026.

Richard Smith, managing director of the Road Haulage Association, emphasised the scale of the fuel price crisis, describing it as a "national concern", and not just an industry issue.

He said: "The Prime Minister said last week that he’s keeping the fuel duty increase under review. We've moved far beyond the review stage - our essential industry needs action now from Government on fuel.

"We're clear: Scrap the fuel duty hike, back essential users with a targeted rebate, and, publish a clear contingency plan for fuel supply.

"Without a credible Government contingency plan in place, disruption to the affordability, resilience, or availability of fuel will impact businesses and communities across the country."

GB News has rounded up the most expensive petrol and diesel prices from across the UK over the bank holiday weekend using data from the Government's Fuel Finder tool.
