System (10) for tire pressure monitoring of a commercial vehicle, comprising at least one vehicle tire (20a, 20b, 22a, 22b), wherein at least one vehicle tire (20a, 20b, 22a, 22b) is assigned a pressure sensor (24a, 24b, 26a, 26b) for detecting a tire internal pressure, an electrically controllable tire filling system (28) for varying the tire internal pressure, and a control unit (46) communicating with the pressure sensor (24a, 24b, 26a, 26b) and the tire filling system (28), wherein the control unit (46) detects a defect-related pressure loss in the at least one vehicle tire (20a, 20b, 22a, 22b) on the basis of the detected tire internal pressure. According to the invention, the control unit (46) determines in a return-to-base mode a temporal progression of the detected defect-related pressure loss. On the basis of the determined temporal progression, the control unit (46) calculates a volume flow rate required for continuous compensation of the pressure loss and controls this volume flow rate by means of the tire filling system (28) into the at least one vehicle tire (20a, 20b, 22a, 22b).
