The invention relates to a device V, preferably for a motor vehicle, in particular a commercial vehicle. The device V comprises an internal combustion engine 1, an expansion machine 3, and a generator 4 and is distinguished in particular by the fact that the expansion machine 3 and the generator 4 can be operatively connected to one another as well as each individually with the internal combustion engine 1 via a transmission 2, in order to enable optional electrical use and mechanical use of the energy from the expansion machine 3. The invention also relates to a corresponding operating method.
