A method is proposed for inspecting an electronically controlled injection device (7) for injecting a fuel into a cylinder (3) of an internal combustion engine (1), in particular a large diesel engine, having a piston (4) for reciprocating movement in the cylinder(3), and a common rail system (2) with a pressure reservoir (6) for delivering fuel to the cylinder (3), said method comprising a test cycle with the steps of: a) sending during operation of the engine (1) a test injection command (TF) to the injection device (7) causing the injection of fuel into the cylinder (3), wherein the test injection command (TF) begins after the ignition of the fuel in this cylinder (3) has started, and is measured such that it corresponds to a predetermined test amount of fuel to be injected, and b) determining a pressure response of the pressure reservoir (6), said method further comprising the step of comparing the pressure response with a reference signal for assessing the condition of the injection device (7). In addition, a large diesel engine, especially a large two-stroke diesel engine, is proposed having a control device being designed for performing this method.
