The present invention relates to a belt tensioner (1), comprising - a base body (2) with a bottom section (20) and two side flanges (21, 22), - a tension lever (3) with two side flanges (30, 31), which is pivotably hinged to the base body (2) and is pivotable by pivoting from an unlocking position into a locking position and vice versa, as well as - locking means which are configured to lock the tension lever (3) in the locking position on the base body (2), wherein the locking means - a spring element (4), which is arranged on an inner side of the tension lever (3) pointing toward the bottom section (20) in the locking position and has a first locking section (43) which extends outward through a first side flange (30) of the tension lever (3), and - a first snap groove (210), which is formed in a first side flange (21) of the base body (2) and into which the first locking section (43) engages in the locking position of the tension lever (3) and is held therein to block an opening movement of the tension lever (3) by mechanical preloading of the spring element (4), comprise, wherein the spring element (4) has a handling section (40) which can be acted upon by a user with an external force, so that the first locking section (43) can be moved against the preloading of the spring element (4) out of the first snap groove (210), wherein the spring element (4) has a second locking section (44) which extends outward through a second side flange (31) of the tension lever (3), and that the locking means comprise a second snap groove (211), which is formed in a second side flange (22) of the base body (2) and into which the second locking section (44) engages in the locking position of the tension lever (3) and is held therein to block the opening movement of the tension lever (3) by the mechanical preloading of the spring element (4).
