A power supply system (1) comprising at least one traction module (2) comprising a DC bus (21) connected to a catenary and a converter (20) configured for powering at least one traction motor (9) for driving the train, an auxiliary load module (3) connected to the DC bus (21) and configured for powering the auxiliary loads (6, 7) of the train when the power supply system (1) is powered from the catenary, and a battery (8) configured for powering the pre-selected auxiliary loads and the traction motor (9) in the absence of power supply from the catenary. The auxiliary load module (3) comprises at least one unidirectional battery charger (30) configured for charging the battery (8) from the DC bus (21) when the power supply system (1) is powered from the catenary. The power supply system (1) also comprises a support module (4) connected to the battery (8) and to the traction module (2) by galvanic insulation means of the power supply system, and configured for allowing the flow of current from the battery (8) to the traction module (2) in the absence of power supply from the catenary.
