The invention relates to a method for exchanging data between a navigation device and a data cloud regarding a route (). The method includes the steps of: storing the route () in the data cloud and in the navigation device, assigning a route identifier for the route () in the data cloud, transferring the route identifier from the data cloud to the navigation device, and transmitting additional data between the navigation device and the data cloud, each of which is related to a route segment () of the route () and is transmitted together with the route identifier.
