PROVIDING ADDITIONAL MAP DATA FOR AN OFFROAD PATH WITH A NAVIGATION DEVICE

The invention relates to a method for operating a navigation device, which has a map database with map data representing multiple routes (201, 202), a history database and an additional map database, with the following steps: moving the navigation device along multiple route segments (203a, 203b, 203c, 204) outside the routes (201, 202), whereby history data representing the course of the route segments (203a, 203b, 203c, 204) are stored in the history database, identifying one of the route segments (203a, 203b) whose course substantially matches the course of another of the route segments (203a, 203b) using the history data, generating additional map data representing the identified route segment (203a, 203b) using the history data, and storing the additional map data in the additional map database, so that the additional map data are usable for a navigation operation executable with the navigation device.
